It’s a sign of the times! A Shell gas station washroom in Lac La Biche, Alberta has been declared one of the best washrooms in the nation. As thousands of Canadians hit the road for their final summer getaways, there will now be less apprehension about where to stop for some much needed ‘relief’. GasBuddy, the smartphone app helping consumers avoid paying full price for fuel, reveals the highest rated national and regional gas station washrooms brands in Canada according to more than 3 million gas station ratings and reviews in the GasBuddy app. 

For GasBuddy’s Top Gas Station Washroom Brands in Canada, gas station washroom brands were divided into two segments based on the total number of Canadian retail locations listed in the GasBuddy app. National gas station brands are defined as having more than 250 locations in multiple provinces. Regional brands are located in a couple of provinces with fewer than 250 locations listed.

Saskatoon, Sask. based CO-OP flushed the competition by claiming the top spot in the nation, followed by Saint John, N.B. based Irving, Montreal, Que. based Ultramar, Toronto, Ont. based Canadian Tire and Calgary, Alta. based Shell. The province with the highest gas station washroom ratings overall is New Brunswick.

“Award-winning washrooms are just one example of how much gas stations have evolved to being true destinations serving quality food, providing wonderful service and attracting more loyal customers,” says Frank Beard, convenience store trends analyst at GasBuddy. “I expect more gas stations to be named ‘best washrooms in Canada’ in the years to come.”  

In fact, according to GasBuddy data, gas station washrooms user ratings have been trending up overall. Positive ratings have increased by 4% since 2017, with 30% of all Canadian gas station washroom reviews being positive, 9% of ratings being negative and the remainder being neutral.
